What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects people’s behaviour. ADHD is characterised by symptoms such as difficulty focusing, restless behaviour, and impulsivity.

Individuals with ADHD may also struggle to sleep and can experience symptoms that have a considerable impact on their day-to-day life.

It is estimated that around 2.6 million people in the UK are affected by this condition, yet only 8.2% of diagnosed individuals are receiving prescriptions.

How does Medical Cannabis work?

Medical Cannabis works in partnership with the body’s endocannabinoid system to regulate symptoms via the central and peripheral nervous systems. The endocannabinoid system is an active and complex cell signalling network consisting of endocannabinoids, enzymes, and cannabinoid receptors.

Research suggests the endocannabinoid system helps regulate and balance key functions such as sleep, appetite, mood and memory.

The cannabinoids found in Medical Cannabis – such as THC and CBD – bind to receptors in the endocannabinoid system to promote the regulation of the body’s essential functions.

How can Medical Cannabis help people with ADHD?

Patients who find that their ADHD is not managed effectively through traditional medication can experience new and often positive results when using medical cannabis to relieve their symptoms.

While traditional meds like Adderall and Ritalin are frequently prescribed, they often come with undesirable side effects, including loss of appetite and sleep disturbances.

Medical Cannabis, on the other hand, offers a patient-centric alternative for those who have found traditional medication to be ineffective.

Studies have shown that medical cannabis can have a positive effect on symptoms of ADHD by reducing hyperactivity, anger, anxiety, restlessness, irritability, and depression. These symptoms can be especially challenging for individuals with ADHD if not properly managed.
