What are terpenes?

Terpenes can be described as natural compounds that are responsible for the smell and taste of plants. They can also be found in different strains of cannabis and so far scientists have discovered over 20,000 terpenes, with over 400 different terpenes in cannabis alone.

These natural compounds play an important role in the aroma and flavour of a cannabis strain, which explains why certain variations smell citrusy whilst others smell piney.

Terpenes also play a significant role in the therapeutic effects of cannabis and have garnered attention for their role in the “entourage effect,” which enhances cannabis’ physiological benefits in comparison to isolated cannabinoids.

Where is terpinolene found?

Terpinolene can be commonly found in strains that are reported as energising, uplifting and calming, particularly sativa strains. Did you know that some of the most common cannabis strains have a small concentration of terpinolene?

This terpene can also be found in cumin, parsnip, rosemary, sage, lilac, nutmeg and tea trees.

What conditions can terpinolene-abundant strains support with?

This terpene has been known to benefit patients with insomnia, with one study finding that terpinolene possesses sedative qualities which may also support patients that are struggling with anxiety.

In addition, this terpene has antibacterial and antifungal benefits and is recognised as a natural antiseptic to treat superficial wounds whilst preventing inflammation and infection.

Whilst more research is need, one study revealed a positive effect of the antioxidants of terpinolene on cardiovascular disease.

How should I vape cannabis with high levels of terpinolene?

To maximise the benefits of this terpene when vaping, it is recommended to heat it at 185°C/ 365°F as this is the boiling point.

Patients that are looking to harness the benefits of terpinolene-abundant strains can check their eligibility for medical cannabis here. Our specialist consultants address the specific needs of each patient through bespoke treatment plans using cannabis-based prescription medicines (CBPMs).
